Dunedin, S. Island
After three days in Christchurch we started our journey around the South Island with our first planned stop being Dunedin. En route to Dunedin we came across a place called Moeraki Boulders. After stopping to check it out, it turns out that this is where enormous, round boulders are all over the beach. Apparently they were brought in by the sea and deposited on the beach. How that one works we're not quite sure but it's certainly quite a strange one!
Louise lazing on the boulders!
Once we finally found somewhere to stay in Dunedin we thought we'd pay a visit to one of the local sights...a beach renowned for sightings of extremely rare pengiuns that have yellow eyes! We drove down to the car park only to be greeted by a 40minute walk down the side of a mountain to get to the beach! Although we thought it might be a little unwise, given that it was starting to get dark, we decided to check it out anyway. Luckily for us we managed to find two of the little critters and, indeed they do have yellow eyes! We also saw a massive Sea Lion chilling out on the beach! On the way back, light started to fall, leaving us not quite sure on which way to head up the mountain! We did manage, however, to follow everyone elses footprints in the sand and luckily for us, they took us the right way!
Dunedin itself wasn't very spectacular, although it is home to the steepest road in the world. Of course we had to check that one out for ourselves and yep, it's pretty steep! In fact the footpath is converted in places to steps since it's too steep to walk up!

The rare yellow-eyed pengiuns
frantically running away from me!
